Our latest cARTridges artist takes inspiration from people and the everyday moments and interactions that happen all around us.
Rachael Jamieson is an Exeter-based artist whose work centres on people, drawing inspiration for everyday interactions.
“My primary interest is in people. I love to paint faces and to seek to capture an individual’s uniqueness and vitality. I also explore ways that people interact in everyday situations – in conversation, in cafes, walking or playing together but also people in isolation – sat reading or waiting for a night train.”
Having studied at Somerset College of Art and trained at the Newlyn School of Art, Rachael has exhibited a number of times with Devon Open Studies as well as at other venues. She cites a wide variety of artists among her influences.
“I am very drawn to the work of [Edgar] Degas and his key-hole scenes of everyday life and also to [Johannes] Vermeer and [Edward] Hopper – the slight mystery of who and why, of solitude and alienation that resonates today. Other influences include Peter Doig and the bold, strong colourful work of the Bay Area artists such as [Richard] Diebenkorn.”
Of her own work, she says:
“I use acrylics for figure work and when tackling large canvasses – this enables me to be bold and expansive. But I also love using oil paint for its rich forgiving nature, particularly when doing portraits.”
