Having proudly won the Devon and Somerset Law Society Sustainability Award in both 2023 and 2025, we’re delighted that Cartridges Law’s ongoing commitment to sustainability continues to be recognised. These awards are a testament to the dedication and passion in our journey to becoming a Net Zero law firm.
The driving force behind this work is our Green Team – a cross-departmental group of staff established in 2021 to lead and embed sustainable practices across the firm. From the outset, the Green Team recognised that enthusiasm alone wouldn’t lead to lasting change. Instead, they committed to careful research, staff engagement, and a data-driven approach to reducing the firm’s carbon emissions.

Hannah Mooney, Marketing Coordinator and founding member of the Green Team, says: “One of our early steps was joining a national pilot scheme with carbon-calculating platform Net Zero Now, undertaking a comprehensive carbon footprint analysis that considered everything from office energy use to staff travel, IT equipment, and even home working. Armed with this data, we started making simple but meaningful changes, including moving to refillable and locally sourced office supplies and ensuring lights were not left on unnecessarily.”
The firm also signed up to the Cycle to Work scheme, as a result of which three colleagues (10% of the team) have purchased bikes and switched to a car-free commute, and introduced a new recycling system including food waste and battery recycling.
Hannah adds; ”We have also started to explore larger changes to reduce our energy use. We have switched to a greener energy supplier and moved to almost sole use of Heat Pumps for heating throughout the winter months, have started to install LED lighting throughout the office, and are putting together options to improve the insulation of the building. We have made the conscious choice to invest in making our current office more energy efficient – rather than relocating – because we believe in staying rooted in our local community.”
With three years of data under their belt, the Green Team have been able to assess their data and measure where real changes need to happen.
“Initially, it was a steep learning curve, but over time, sustainable thinking has become second nature. We’ve transformed enthusiasm into real change and are excited to implement the results of our Emissions Reduction Plan, officially making our commitment to becoming a Net Zero Law Firm.”
We’re thrilled to see our efforts recognised by DASLS, and we remain committed to leading by example – showing that even smaller businesses in traditional sectors have the potential to drive positive environmental change.
