Name: Kathryn Battey
Job title: Solicitor
What’s your role in the Estate Planning team, and what does a typical day look like for you?
I’m a solicitor in the Estate Planning team. My day usually involves a mix of client meetings, drafting wills, powers of attorney and administering estates. No two days are the same, which is what I particularly enjoy about the role – each client brings their own unique circumstances.
How did you get into this area of law?
I was drawn to Estate Planning work during my training contract. I enjoyed the personal aspect of the work and it felt rewarding to help individuals and families make informed decisions about their future. I personally had a close relationship with my own grandparents, which also gave me a real appreciation for the importance of supporting older clients with empathy and respect.
What’s been your proudest moment professionally?
My proudest moment professionally was qualifying as a solicitor after years of hard work, dedication and study. It was the culmination of a long journey and a goal I had worked towards for a long time.
If you weren’t working in law, what would you be doing?
I love animals so I could imagine working in a role that involves their care or welfare, maybe in a rescue or rehabilitation setting. I especially love cats and have often joked about setting up my own luxury cat hotel!
What’s one piece of advice you often give clients?
It’s important to act sooner rather than later and I always encourage clients to plan ahead. Life is unpredictable, but taking time to prepare is one of the kindest things you can do for your loved ones. Therefore, it is advised to make a will or power of attorney at the earliest opportunity.
How do you ensure your advice remains clear and accessible, especially for elderly or vulnerable clients?
I avoid legal jargon and take extra time to explain concepts clearly. I also ensure clients feel comfortable to ask questions. When needed, I offer home visits if this is more convenient or puts the client at ease.
What’s one misconception people often have about wills or probate?
Many people think that if they do not have a large estate, they do not need a will. Even a modest estate can be complicated without one and a will ensures your wishes are respected.
What’s the most common myth about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)?
It is a common misconception that LPAs are only for the elderly. In reality, anyone can lose capacity due to illness or accident. Putting LPAs in place early is a sensible precaution, regardless of age.
What’s the most rewarding part of your work in Estate Planning?
I love building strong relationships with clients. It’s a privilege to be trusted with such personal matters and to provide reassurance during important life stages. The most rewarding part is knowing that I have made a tangible difference – whether by simplifying a complex estate, protecting a client’s wishes, or giving a family peace of mind during difficult times.
