Devon and Somerset Law Society Awards 2023

We are thrilled to announce that Cartridges Law has been shortlisted in five categories for the 2023 Devon and Somerset Law Society awards.

DASLS is a professional forum for lawyers in Devon and Somerset, so recognition in these awards comes from other lawyers and law firms – something that means a lot to us.

We are delighted that Anita Laws has been shortlisted for Legal Executive of the Year. Partner Julie Farmer says, “Anita’s uniqueness is her client management. She will care for and nurture her client through the process and if they are in danger of making a daft decision, whether they are giving too much or expecting too much, she will make this clear to them in no uncertain terms – but at all times they will know ‘she has their back’.”

Shortlisted: Support Team Member of the Year 2023

We are also incredibly proud of Mark Fairchild, who has been shortlisted for Support Team Member of the Year. Described as the ‘glue’ which holds the family law department together, Mark Fairchild’s job as administrator is so much more than this. Often working with the most vulnerable individuals in our society, Mark supports his colleagues and goes above and beyond what would be expected of somebody in that role. But Mark also knows that it isn’t just colleagues with Cartridges Law that he must work alongside and takes time and effort to build up relationships with those outside of the firm, understanding different professions involved in often urgent and complex court cases.

Shortlisted: Sustainability Award 2023

The Cartridges Law Green Team epitomises what it means not just to adhere to environmental standards, but to lead by example and to engage all staff to become invested in the journey. Established in 2021, the six members of the Green Team come from across all areas and departments of the firm. One of their first actions was to sign up to a pilot scheme with carbon-calculating platform, Net Zero Now.

Whilst the data collection exercise was hugely detailed and took a great deal of time and energy from already busy staff members, the Green Team agreed that this made the process robust and gave credit to their overall plan. Net Zero Now is working with the Law Society to validate the protocol and once they have received the data from Cartridges Law, the company will receive a Climate Impact Report and Emissions Reduction Plan.

The team didn’t want to wait for this plan to make changes to the way that we operate, and they put into practice a number of initiatives that could be implemented immediately and would go some way to reducing the emissions created by Cartridges Law.

We’re really excited that the sustainability work of our Green Team, and the firm as a whole, has been recognised by the DASLS Award panel.

Shortlisted: Law Firm of the Year (up to £3m) 2023

In shortlisting us for Law Firm of the Year (up to £3m), the judges have recognised our reputation for offering reliable and practical legal advice to our community and our strong commitment to legal aid, as well as the flexibility and adaptability that have been a huge contributor to our success. Our 34 members of staff, many of whom have been with the firm for 20+ years and come into law through a variety of traditional and non-traditional routes, have helped us to get to where we are now – in the strongest position we have been for many years.

Shortlisted: Employer of the Year 2023

We also received a surprise nomination for the category of Employer of the Year, with the judges putting us forward for this award on the strength of our other nominations. As previous winners of the DASLS Employer of the Year award, we continue to be proud of our reputation as an outstanding employer. We firmly believe that the support we give our staff members is an investment in our business, and that is reflected in the hard work and dedication of our staff.

Congratulations to all the finalists. We’re looking forward to this year’s awards ceremony on 22 June.
