The Pride flag – Do you know that this flag represents?
The Pride flag is made up of six colours, each to represent the diversity within the LGBT community. It was first flown in 1978 at the “Gay Freedom Parade” in San Francisco.
Gilbert Baker was an artist in the US and the creator of the Pride Flag. He was challenged by Harvey Milk, the first openly gay councillor in America, to come up with a positive symbol for the gay community.
Originally the Pride flag represented the gay community, but it is now more commonly seen as a positive symbol for the wider LGBT+ community.
